The skipper's ticket practical portion of the assessment is conducted following successful completion of the theoretical exam. The practical assessment will test your knowledge in the following:
The Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST) is a certificate assessing a set of marine safety competencies, which ensures people in charge of recreational power crafts, including jet skis and yachts with motors, have the minimum skills and knowledge to protect themselves and their passengers, and to share the waterways safely with others.
This training programme, an initiative of the Department of Planning and Industry, ensures boat owners have the knowledge and essential skills to safely operate their vessels. As of April 1 2008, every skipper of a registrable, recreational vessel, powered by a motor greater than 4.5kwp (6 hp) (RST vessel) is required to hold a Recreational Skipper's Ticket.
Southern Ocean Sailing is an authorised assessor (authorised provider Yachting WA) for people wishing to obtain a Recreational Skipper's Ticket.
You do not have to participate in a training course to gain an RST, but if you would like to undertake some training prior to the assessment this can be arranged. We have available a comprehensive work-book designed as a self-learn package and it contains all the information you will need to know and will be provided to you free of charge.
For more information about the Skipper's Ticket, please visit the Recreational Skipper's Ticket page on the Department of Transport website.
Booklets are available from any Department of Transport office or agency. If getting hold of one is inconvenient we can arrange to have a book posted out to you. Contact us on 0428 42 99 11 and and we will have it posted out the next working day.

FANTASTIC! Kristoffer and I were both a bit nervous about different aspects of getting our recreational skippers tickets. You did a superb job of putting us both at ease. We both felt confident with what and how you were teaching. I will (and have been) recommending your services for neither Kristoffer or myself can find anything that we would have changed about the whole day. Thanks again for such an enjoyable and rewarding experience Both of our dads are proud and impressed (a little reluctant to hand over the boat keys still!)

Anyone looking at obtaining a Recreational Skippers Ticket, Mark McRae is the man to see. His vast experience and knowledge of the sea is second to none. His easy going personality, along with his obvious love and respect of the sea shines through when he explains the pro’s and con’s of small boat handling, the skippers responsibilities, safety of passengers, boat and equipment. Unsure of anything or like a demonstration of any procedure? Just ask! There is nothing like getting advice from a pro who has your interests at heart. Enjoyable, unhurried and no pressure. I recommend and rate Mark highly. A true down to earth professional!
